Barrie says it has surpassed the halfway point in its goal to create 840 affordable housing units by 2025, but a local homelessness advocacy group calls that pronouncement “concerning and misleading.”

Simcoe County Alliance to End Homelessness Barrie chapter representative Jennifer van Gennip said “conservatively, three-quarters” of the 441 units established by the city since 2015 do not meet the definition of “affordable.” Specifically, nearly 180 privately created second suites and about 150 rent supplements listed should not count.
