With temperatures set to plunge past -20 C in the coming days, Ottawa emergency shelters are taking special precautions to ensure the city’s most vulnerable are protected from the cold — despite battling capacity challenges.

It won’t be easy to shelter everyone who needs it, but as Peter Tilley, executive director at The Ottawa Mission pointed out, it’s better than the alternative.

“We’re not going to ask anyone to leave on a cold winter’s night,” said Tilley.
