In a bold move Prince Edward County council has voted to consider putting $250,000 dollars into the 2018 budget to support affordable housing projects.
The move made Monday as the County went through its first day of budget discussions, is something of a surprise as council is facing an estimated tax hike of 2.4 per cent with the budget as is, as well as a significant infrastructure deficit.
“Affordable housing is a big deal,” said Coun. Bill Roberts when tabling the motion.
He pointed to how 12 per cent of County residents struggle with food insecurity and 15 per cent of those between the ages of 18 to 65 are living at or below the poverty line.
