Elevated efforts to generate awareness and action to tackle issues of poverty may be contributing to a new set of problems, including the risk of overwhelming and desensitizing society to the all-important issue.

The fight to find evolving solutions to poverty must now also focus on new ways to get the message out to prevent appeals for help from falling on deaf ears or from drowning in a sense of helplessness.

These are among the key messages shared at the annual poverty symposium hosted by the Social Planning Council of Cambridge and North Dumfries last Thursday (June 15).

The event also saw the launch of a new Solutions to Poverty initiative, which will combine efforts of volunteers willing to make a difference with new methods to share their goals and results.
