Murray Street Baptist Church could once again host Peterborough’s low-barrier emergency shelter, with beds being moved out of Peterborough Public Library as soon as November.

A staff report recommends that city council choose to have staff from the Brock Mission shelter operate the reopened site, after a falling-out between the Warming Room Community Ministries and the city saw their contract torn up.

Ongoing renovations could push the shelter opening date past Nov. 1 though, in which case the library would continue to be used until work is complete.

For months the city has been searching for a new location for the shelter, after it temporarily closed on Canada Day. That led to more than 40 people seeking refuge in tents downtown, creating a divide in the community between those supporting the campers and those wanting them to go.
