The cost to purchase healthy food in Perth County for a family of four went down by $7.50 per week compared to last year, the latest Perth District Health Unit’s report on food affordability shows.

But the local organization, which conducts the study every year in the county, said buying nutritious food is still out of reach for a lot of families in the community.

“We estimate the numbers we have here in Perth County are that about nine per cent of people are affected by food insecurity,” said Natalee Ridgeway, public health dietitian and who participated in putting together The Price of Eating Well report for 2017.

“There are just too many people here in our community that can’t afford to buy enough healthy foods for themselves and their families.”
