For starters, college students I’ve spoken to recognize that volunteering is not always or even usually voluntary. Many young people feel it is mandatory.

High schools and junior highs in Canada require it. Students know that to get into one’s top pick of universities, volunteer hours are essentially a prerequisite. Once enrolled, students feel the need to undertake volunteer activities so that they look good to prospective employers.

Indeed, volunteering feels compulsory for many young people. So, if it’s not necessarily out of altruism, then why are we set on volunteerism as a society?
