We have heard a lot about Bill 148 in the news of late. We are very happy to see that the minimum wage is finally moving workers above the poverty line in Ontario, it is much needed.
However, there are other things to consider in regards to this bill.
The bill is making changes to the Employment Standards Act. This act provides protection to workers in the province of Ontario.
It defines the rules that employers have to follow in respect to their employees.
This act has not been amended for decades, and due to changes that have happened over time it is imperative that changes be made now.
One of the changes that have happened is the proliferation of temporary agencies. Instead of hiring staff themselves, many organizations have temporary agencies contract workers for them. Many of these workers make minimum wage, with no benefits at all.
The organizations have no responsibilities to the workers, and these workers can be summarily dismissed at any time.
