Local affordable housing advocates are applauding the province’s plan to spend $1.2 billion over the next five years to expand affordable housing builds by another 4,000 units.

As a result of last Monday’s investment announcement by the provincial NDP government, Alberta is now amongst the majority of provinces in Canada to have a long-term provincial affordable housing strategy.

“Growing up in rent subsidized housing, I know how critical affordable housing is for many, including single-parent families,” said Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jessica Littlewood.

“(We are) in need of and (are) ready for affordable housing, and I look forward to connecting with the Heartland Housing Foundation to see how we can advocate for some of those 4,100 units to be built here so that families don’t need to leave our community.”
